Chairman of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Golam Rahman Thursday said it would not be possible to check wide scale corruption if political parties do not reduce their dependency on businessmen regarding their expenditure. The influence of businessmen on politics has to be cut, he said while giving his opinion about setting up of public fund for maintaining expenditures of the political parties. The ACC chairman was addressing a seminar on 'Effectiveness of Anti-Corruption Commission: Why and How?' at the auditorium of BRAC Inn Centre at Mohakhali in the city on the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day. Transparency International of Bangladesh (TIB) organized the seminar. Eminent Economist Prof Muzaffar Ahmed, former ACC commissioner Prof M Moniruzzaman Miah and Prof Dr Asif Nazrul, among others, addressed the seminar with Chairman of TIB Trustee Board M Hafizuddin Khan in the chair. Executive Director of the TIB Dr Iftekharuzzaman presented the keynote paper.Golam Rahman said the ACC has no intention to file any case against any person, either lawmaker or political leader, if it does not get any specific allegation.He underscored the need for amending the laws relating to the ACC to make it a strong body. The activities of the ACC have full accountability, the ACC chief said adding politically motivated cases are not acceptable to the commission. Golam Rahman said all are equal to the ACC, saying the commission would take actions against people who are corrupt.Prof Muzaffar said unhealthy competition in our society is one of the main reasons behind corruption. Referring to widespread corruption in society, he said the commission can not prevent corruption alone. The parliamentary standing committees would have to raise voices in this regard, he added.
