BDR mutiny trial begins


The much-orchestrated trial of the February 25-26 countrywide BDR mutiny began on Tuesday as nine of the mutineers stood in the dock of special court to testify amid tight security.RAB, police, BDR and detectives have taken special security measures in and around the special judge's court-4 established at Jhagrabil Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) sector headquarters in the hill town. "Security has also been intensified in and around the district jail wherein a group of BDR personnel is detained to stand trial," says a firsthand report.The formal trial proceedings began at 3pm and concluded at 3.50pm with the nine accused reading out the oath of submissions. To begin with, nine members of the border force from 12 Rifles Battalion at Langadu Rajnagar camp, arrested on charge of revolt, were produced before the court on the first day. The court received the records of charges brought against the accused and then passed its orders. "Submit the facts and findings against the mutineers to the court tomorrow (Wednesday), the court said to the prosecution. Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) Director-General Maj General Mainul Islam presided over the special trial court. Lt Col Abdur Rab and Major Mostafa were two other members of the three-member judges' panel while one representative of the Attorney-General assisted the court.Following the mutiny, which sparked off at the Pilkhana headquarters of BDR and then spread to other garrisons, charges were brought against 39 jawans of five units of Rangamati sector. The accused have been detained in the district jail as per court order. They will be produced before the special court in phases. Earlier, the government decided to set up six special courts to try the accused-two in Dhaka and four outside.On Feb 25-26, BDR personnel staged the mutiny at the BDR Headquarters at Pilkhana over low pay and poor condition, and the uprising sparked off mutinous demonstrations in other establishments of the border force across the country. The courts will hold the trial of the BDR men only for the mutiny, not the other acts of crime committed during the revolt, such as murders, looting and so.
