Foil evil attempt, PM tells army


Prime minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday called upon the army to remain united to foil any evil attempt against the beloved motherland by maintaining discipline, unity and fellow feelings within the force.The prime minister, also in charge of the defence ministry, made the call while presiding over the Formation Commanders' Conference-2009 of Bangladesh Army at the Army Headquarters in Dhaka Cantonment.She told the function that the government is going to formulate a specific media policy soon regarding media publicity on army and defence matters, as confusing propaganda may break the morale of the forces and harm national interest. At the same time, her government has taken a step to make the Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) directorate more effective and time-befitting by reconstituting the existing organisational setup of the public information window of the military.Referring to recent news reports in some newspapers and on different TV channels on the Bangladesh Army, she said, "Any negative remark or discussion on army strikes on the moral courage of all military personnel."In this context, she called upon all army personnel not to be confused with any "propaganda" and expressed the hope that they would discharge the duties vested in them with utmost sincerity and honesty in greater national interest. "You have to take all possible measures to keep moral courage of the army personnel at the highest level removing all existing problems by identifying those," she told the army commanders.The prime minister noted that historically the Army is a disciplined, sincere and patriotic force and the government as well as the people are reposing a deep faith on them for safeguarding the country's sovereignty and integrity. Praising the Army as the pride of the nation, she said her government wants that the force remain above all criticisms and as a glittering symbol of sovereignty.She called upon the army to keep up the laurel that they earned at both national and international arenas by helping country's historic ideology and military values flourish.Sheikh Hasina also asked them to take effective steps so that "no wrong impression or evil force can hinder their forward march".The prime minister requested the army to keep full confidence in the existing law of the land, judicial system and administration. "The existing process could be time-consuming. But it is possible to achieve a sustainable and permanent solution only through this process," she said. Referring to her election pledge Sheikh Hasina said her government is pledge-bound to build up a modern and strong Army in the country. "Our main objective is to attain economic prosperity quickly, maintaining the country's internal stability," she told the army commanders' meet.Laying emphasis on training for gaining professional skills, she said there is no alternative to constant exercises for attaining efficiency and professional abilities. Earlier on her arrival at the venue, Chief of Army Staff General Mohammad Abdul Mubeen received the prime minister.Prime minister's Defence Adviser Major General (rtd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique was among others present on the occasion.
