Remain alert against conspiracy: Hasina

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday instructed her cabinet colleagues to remain vigilant as a vested quarter was hatching conspiracy to create unrest and destabilise the country's garment sector.She also asked the ministers to prepare a list of achievements of their respective ministries over the past 10 months so that these are reflected in the address of president Zillur Rahman at the first session of Jatiya Sangsad in the new year. Sheikh Hasina gave these instructions while chairing the regular weekly meeting of the cabinet held yesterday at the Secretariat, according to sources. The cabinet extended the retirement age of the freedom fighter employees of the republic to 59 from 57 taking into consideration the contributions and sacrifices of the worthy sons of the soil in the nine-month-long war of independence in 1971. A final decision to this effect was adopted at the meeting of the cabinet. Earlier, at an another meeting of the cabinet, a decision was adopted, in principle, to extend the retirement age of the freedom fighter government employees. Briefing reporters on the resolutions adopted at the cabinet meeting at the Press Information Department, prime minister's press secretary Abdul Kalam Azad said the list of public holidays in 2010 has also been approved at the meeting. He added that there would be 13 public holidays and eight holidays through executive order in the next year, which include a public holiday on the birthday of father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on March 17. The birthday of Bangabandhu would be observed as the National Children's Day. LGRD and cooperatives minister Syed Ashraful Islam proposed reintroduction of public holiday on Bangabandhu's birthday on March 17 and the cabinet gave approval to his suggestion. The cabinet also gave final approval to the EPZ (Export Processing Zone) Sramik (Workers) Sangha (Association) and Industrial Relations (Amendment) Act 2009 allowing floating and operation of Sramik Kalyan Sangha, the workers' welfare association, in the EPZs. Besides, the cabinet gave approval to the induction of two vice-chairmen of Upazila Parishad as advisers in the Upazila Coordination Committee for implementation of the temporary employment programme by involving the youths having SSC or higher educational qualifications, in nation building activities. Earlier, the chairman of the Upazila Parishad and the local legislator were advisers of the Upazila Coordination Committee.In principle, the cabinet approved the amendment brought to the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council Act of 1980.The cabinet also gave final approval to the Fish Hatchery Act, 2009 keeping a provision that none could import fish-fries (renu pona) without prior permission of the authorities concerned. Punitive measures would be taken against anybody who violates the government order in this regard.The press secretary said the amendments to the Fish Hatchery Act were brought in with a view to encouraging local entrepreneurs to set up fish hatcheries equipped with the latest scientific machinery and technologies so that they could produce more fish-fries locally through research.Besides, he said, the cabinet hailed the November 19 verdict of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court in the appeal in Bangabandhu Murder Case retaining the capital punishment awarded by the High Court to the self-confessed killers of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members, who were assassinated on the fateful night of August 15 in 1975.The cabinet hoped that the politics of killing, coup and conspiracy would be ended once and for all in the country following the verdict. Abul Kalam Azad said that at the outset, the cabinet felicitated prime minister Sheikh Hasina for her nomination for the Indira Gandhi Peace Award. Members of the cabinet lauded Sheikh Hasina's role and contributions in establishing of peace and her initiatives for changing the people's lot, the press secretary added.
