Trial for killings at BDR HQs to begin soon: Home Minister


Home Minister Sahara Khatun Tuesday said that the trial for the killings at the BDR headquarters would begin soon, reports UNB."Many army officials were killed during the carnage. The trial for the BDR mutiny began Tuesday and I expressed the hope the trial for the BDR killings would also begin soon," she said.The Home Minister was speaking as the chief guest at the International Conference on 'Human Security Approach to Counter Extremism in South Asia: Relevance of Japanese Culture'.Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organised the two-day conference with support from the Japan Foundation at the BIISS auditorium.Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Tamotsu Shinotsuka spoke as the special guest at the conference chaired by BIISS Chairman of Board of Governors Maj Gen Muhammad Firdaus Mian. BIISS Director General Maj Gen Sheikh Md Monirul Islam gave the welcome address.The home minister expressed the hope that the CID would soon submit the charge sheet on the BDR carnage and the people of Bangladesh would be able to see the trial like they did in the Bangabandhu Murder case though after long 34 years.She said that the countries in the South Asian region would have to take initiative to tackle terrorism and Bangladesh is quite earnest in this regard. "Our aim is not only to remove terrorism from Bangladesh but also to root out the menace from other countries with combined efforts."Replying to a query, the minister said that the present government had unveiled the inquiry report on the BDR mutiny. "Inquiry committees are formed by the government at all times, but their reports rarely see the light."Asked to comment on the recent death threat to the education minister purportedly by Islamists for adopting agnostic education policy, she strongly said that they were ready whatever threats come.
