Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Tuesday said her government took initiatives to pave ways for a bright future for youths while they need to play a pioneering role for the socio-economic development of the country upholding the values of honesty."We want to pave ways for a bright future for the younger generation and youths of the country," she told the inauguration of the National Youth Day organised by Youth Development Department at Osmany Memorial Hall. She advised the youth to be honest and play the pioneering role in socio-economic uplift of the country.State minister for youth Ahad Ali Sarkar chaired the function. The Prime Minister said several countries, which won their independence in recent decades, progressed much ahead compared to Bangladesh while she attributed the underdevelopment to the past military rules. She urged the youth to recover the lost development pace or expedite the development process using their talents saying that a nation, which had won its independence through armed struggle, could not lag behind."The military autocrats repeatedly pushed the youth to wrong paths offering them drugs, illegal money and weapons . . . to fulfil their evil ambitions, disrupting the democratic rule," Sheikh Hasina said. The prime minister said during the 1996-2001 tenure of her Awami League government, some 16 lakh youths were trained in 50 different trades for their self-employment alongside providing bank loans without collateral through the Employment Generation Bank.Sheikh Hasina also was critical of the past BNP-Jamaat regime saying they had demoralized the youth through their corruption and urged the young generation not to amass wealth though illegal means at the cost of country's interest."We want to build a Bangladesh which will be free from curses of corruption, drug and terrorism," she said.Sheikh Hasina reiterated her electoral pledges to provide employment to an unemployed young man or woman from every family but added that it did not mean providing readymade jobs to them alone, rather the pledge was meant for creating self- employment opportunities. She said the government already approved National Service Policy creating temporary job opportunities for unemployed youths. The prime minister said under pilot programs, youths aged between 18 and 35 would be provided three months of basic training under 10 specific modules to be engaged in jobs for two years in sectors linked to nation building process."This programme will be expanded to district and upazila levels reviewing the success of the pilot programmes," she said.Sheikh Hasina also noted that the Youth Development Department beyond its regular training programmes planned to launch a club-based networking programme alongside mobile IT training programmes in 36 districts.
